Our department was founded in 1994, under the framework of a program devoted to improving medical care in Leningrad Region, Russia. The primary mission of our department was to provide anesthesia, cardiopulmonary bypass and intensive care services to cardiac surgical patients. As time went by, the unit became a contemporary department, effectively collaborating with all necessary clinical units and experts in a huge clinical complex of Leningrad Region Hospital. This collaboration is quite unique in the city of Saint-Petersburg, and allows us to achieve mortality rate as low as 1.8% (2005), which is less than world average.

The head of our unit is Alexander V. Nikolaev, PhD, a docent at the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care at Saint-Petersburg Medical Academy for Postgraduate Studies.
